Robocopy and a few examples

Robocopy (Robust File Copy) is a command-line file copy utility in Windows Vista. Till Vista this was a part of Windows Resource Kit Tools as a free download (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9D467A69-57FF-4AE7-96EE-B18C4790CFFD&displaylang=en ). Unlike normal copy commands, Robocopy is designed for reliable copy or mirroring while maintaining the permissions, attributes, owner information, timestamps and properties of the objects copied.

Robocopy Syntax

ROBOCOPY <source> <destination> [file…] [options]

<source>        Source Directory (local or network path)
<destination> Destination Directory (local or network path) and
[file…]              Specifies the file or files to be copied. You can use wildcard characters (* or ?), if you want. If the File parameter is not specified, . is used as the default value.

The following command will mirror the directories using Robocopy:
Robocopy \\SourceServer\Share \\DestinationServer\Share /MIR /FFT /Z /XA:H /W:5
/MIR specifies that Robocopy should mirror the source directory and the destination directory. Note that this will delete files at the destination if they were deleted at the source.
/FFT uses fat file timing instead of NTFS. This means the granularity is a bit less precise. For across-network share operations this seems to be much more reliable - just don't rely on the file timings to be completely precise to the second.
/Z ensures Robocopy can resume the transfer of a large file in mid-file instead of restarting.
/XA:H makes Robocopy ignore hidden files, usually these will be system files that we're not interested in.
/W:5 reduces the wait time between failures to 5 seconds instead of the 30 second default.

Robocopy can be setup as a simply Scheduled Task that runs daily, hourly, weekly etc. Note that Robocopy also contains a switch that will make Robocopy monitor the source for changes and invoke synchronization each time a configurable number of changes has been made. This may work in your scenario, but be aware that Robocopy will not just copy the changes, it will scan the complete directory structure just like a normal mirroring procedure. If there are a lot of files & directories, this may hamper performance.

You have copied the contents from source to destination but now you made changes to the Security permissions at source. You wanted to copy only the permission changes and not data.

The default value for CopyFlags is DAT (data, attributes, and time stamps).
Sidenote: ROBOCOPY c:\sourcefolder d:\targetfolder /zb /sec /e /nocopy* may give you similar results but useful ONLY when more permissions are added. it will not consider or update the target for permissions removed at the source.
How to Copy Files Multi-Threaded with Robocopy in Windows 7
Robocopy, short for Robust File Copy, is a command-line directory replication and file copy command utility that first made available as feature in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, although it has been available as part of Windows Resources Kit. In Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, Robocopy utility is further enhanced with ability to multi-threaded copy operation feature.

Multi-threaded support allows Robocopy to open multiple threads simultaneously, allowing many files to be copied in parallel. With multi-threaded copying, total time required to complete the operation will be drastically reduced and cut, when comparing with with typical copying one file at time in serial sequential order.

As Robocopy is generally a command-line only utility (although a GUI add-on is available for Robocopy), the new multi-threaded operation capability has to be called via a new switch supported by Robocopy. The new multi-threaded copy feature can be enabled and turned on with the following parameter:
/MT[:n]
Where n will instruct Robocopy to do multi-threaded copies with n threads (default 8). The value of n must be at least 1 and not greater than 128 (between 1 to 128), with 1 as single thread. In fact, Robocopy will copy files and folders in multi-threaded operation by default, with 8 threads in one go. Note that /MT[:n] switch is not compatible with the /IPG and /EFSRAW operations.

Apple might start manufacturing the next generation iPad from October in cooperation with its Asian component suppliers and assemblers in order to release the tablet early next year, an anonymous source told WSJ.

According to the source, the new iPad will be featured "a high resolution display - 2048 by 1536" to replace the iPad 2's 1024 by 768. Also ABC News revealed that the iPad 3 is also expected to be thinner and lighter than the iPad 2.

"Apple has placed orders for parts for about 1.5 million iPad 3s in the fourth quarter," according to a component supplier. Android, iOS …. they’re so mainstream now. And Windows Phone 7, webOS and Symbian could use another competitor on the market, right?

Of course, I’m being a bit (OK, more than a bit) sarcastic, but there is a new player entering the mobile OS battlefield: Aliyun, from e-commerce and cloud computing group Alibaba.

In a press release Thursday, Alibaba Cloud Computing announced the development of a cloud-based mobile OS dubbed “Aliyun OS.” It’ll debut later this month in China on a new smartphone, the K-Touch Cloud-Smart Phone W700. (Hopefully that’s less of a mouthful in Chinese.)

Aliyun is Linux-based, so it will be able to handle both Android apps and web apps — a combination Alibaba is calling “cloud apps,” meant to provide a more “internet-like” experience on the handset.

“Introducing cloud apps to mobile devices not only brings a whole new user experience, but also greater ease for third-party mobile software developers who will be able to use Internet technology such as HTML5 and JavaScript to reduce the complexity in the app development process,” Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Cloud Computing, says in the release.

The iPhone Dev Team has released updated version of both Redsn0w and PwnageTool tojailbreak iOS 4.3.3 untethered using i0n1c’s untethered exploit.

That makes it an unprecedented three firmwares where the same userland exploit works. We’re not exactly sure why Apple hasn’t fixed the hole yet, but we’re not complaining!
Today’s PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c’s port to 4.3.3 (it’s ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn’t even have an official name!). Texas Instruments has announced that its OMAP4 platform is the first to receive Netflix HD certification which means that the Motorola Droid 3 and the Motorola Droid Bionic may have just gotten a lot more interesting to folks out there searching for a phone on Verizon.

You see, it’s pretty much certain that the Motorola Droid 3 is going to arrive on Thursday with a OMAP4 processorwhich means that it will likely get full 1080p support for Netflix at some point after release.

You may have also heard that there is a debate as to what kind of dual-core processor is going to be in the Motorola Droid Bionic. Originally, the Droid Bionic had a Tegra 2 processor but benchmarks have since revealed that Motorola has at the very least, been toying with a dual-core OMAP4 processor inside their upcoming 4G smartphone. That means that it’s very possible that the Droid Bionic could come with Netflix in HD.

That feature along with 4G speeds would be a fantastic recipe and one that we are hoping that Motorola is cooking up. It might even convince me that a 4.5-inch screen is necessary, who knows.

Who’s excited about the possibility? Frankly, it’s just another reason why you should wait for this device to come out.

The next-generation iPhone, expected to be released around September of this year, will be "thinner and lighter" than the iPhone 4. And while manufacturer Foxconn has had difficulty assembling the devices, Apple may try to move as many as 40 million by the end of the year.

Component supplier sources that spoke to the Wall Street Journal corroborated recent rumors pointing to an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and baseband processors supplied by Qualcomm. However, these same sources suggested that the new iPhone will be "thinner and lighter" than the current model.

WSJ's report adds to the conflicting rumors we have heard in the last few weeks regarding the next-gen iPhone's form factor. Numerous sources, including those for Bloomberg, have said that the new device will look largely the same as the current iPhone 4. Sources for BGR, though, claimed that the device will have a "radical new case design." Perhaps instead we will be ultimately treated to something between both extremes—a thinner and lighter version of the current form factor is certainly plausible.

Nonetheless, we're not convinced that the new iPhone will feature a significantly different form factor. WSJnoted that Hon Hai (aka Foxconn) chairman Terry Gou complained last month that iPhones and iPads are already difficult to assemble because they are so thin. "We hope to raise the yield rate and volume in the second half which will help improve our gross margin," Gou said. That doesn't seem possible if Apple plans to use a new form factor that is "complicated and difficult to assemble," according to WSJ's sources.

More interesting is the fact that one supplier claimed to have been told by Apple to be prepared to ship enough components to Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn to build 25 million iPhones by the end of the year. Apple's additional manufacturing partner, Pegatron, reportedly received an order for as many as 15 million next-gen iPhones. If both sources are correct, Apple could be forecasting iPhone sales of 40 million.

That number may seem high, especially given the fact that the new hardware is not expected to be available until the latter part of the third quarter. But Apple already moved nearly 19 million iPhones in the first calendar quarter of this year, and that figure is double the amount sold the same quarter the year before. With Apple expected to announce another record quarter later this month, 40 million total iPhones in four months might not seem quite so far-fetched.

The recall involves about 45,000 Toyota Highlander hybrids and 36,700 Lexus RX 400h hybrids from the 2006 and 2007 model years.

The company said that some of the transistors on the control boards in some of the subject vehicles were incompetently soldered and could be damaged from heat caused by a large current flow during high-load driving.

If the control board is damaged, warning lamps on the instrument panel will illuminate and in most of the cases the vehicle could enter a low-power driving mode, or the power-supply-circuit fuse could blow and the hybrid system will stop working.

If the fuse blows, the hybrid system will stop and the vehicle will coast to a stop.

This is a big deal for me because I opted for the lower-tier, 200MB data plan. Features and pricing of the Tesla Model S, to date, include that the US base model, equipped with the 160-mile battery, will be priced at $49,900 and that’s AFTER a $7,500 federal tax credit. 230 and 300-mile versions, made possible via different battery offerings, are expected to be priced at $59,900 and $69,900 respectively, though final pricing details won’t be released until later this summer.

As for performance, the vehicle is said to be able to accelerate from 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, with a top speed of 120 MPH. The three different battery sizes are said to be chargeable in as little as 45 minutes. It offers seating for five adults and two children plus bonus cargo space under the hood.

There are 10,000 possible passcodes for an iPhone, yet 15 percent of users have one of the 10 most popular codes, according to app developer Daniel Amitay, whose Big Brother Camera Security apprecords anonymous passcode data from users.

"Because Big Brother's passcode setup screen and lock screen are nearly identical to those of the actual iPhone passcode lock, I figured that the collected information would closely correlate with actual iPhone passcodes," Amitay wrote on his blog.

If he's right, then roughly 10 percent of iPhone users use the ubiquitous 1234 or 0000 - the top two most popular codes -- 2580 -- the middle column of digits on the keypad -- or 1111. Here's the full top ten, taken from a sample size of 204,508:

If you're wondering why 5683 appears on the list, then look at your phone's keypad - those numbers spells out "LOVE."

Years are also popular, with 1990 to 2000 all in the top 50 passcodes and each year from 1980 to 1989 making the top 100. Amitay speculates that many users use graduation or birth years for passcodes. The graduation part of that argument is bolstered by the fact that the third-most popular decade for passcodes is the 2010s.

The bottom line is that a scary percentage of iPhones are probably not well protected, or as Amitay puts it, "With a 15 percent success rate, about 1 in 7 iPhones would easily unlock -- even more if the intruder knows the user's years of birth, relationship status, etc."

Option	Description
/r:<N>	Specifies the number of retries on failed copies. The default value of N is 1,000,000 (one million retries).
/w:<N>	Specifies the wait time between retries, in seconds. The default value of N is 30 (wait time 30 seconds).
/reg	Saves the values specified in the /r and /w options as default settings in the registry.
/tbd	Specifies that the system will wait for share names to be defined (retry error 67).

/unicode	Displays the status output as Unicode text.
/unilog:<LogFile>	Writes the status output to the log file as Unicode text (overwrites the existing log file).

/njh	Specifies that there is no job header.
